Sydney's Inner West mixes terrace-suburb village life with one of the city's most diverse school landscapes: 126 schools from Balmain and Leichhardt through Marrickville to Strathfield and Canterbury. Fort Street High School at Petersham — one of Australia's oldest schools and academically selective — leads on results. Strathfield and Burwood form a private-school precinct of their own, with Meriden School, PLC Sydney at Croydon and MLC School at Burwood all posting strong results, alongside Trinity Grammar and Santa Sabina. The public system's standout is Summer Hill Public School, at the head of a band of solid primaries through Ashfield, Dulwich Hill and Drummoyne, and the Catholic network is extensive — 32 schools — led by St Michael's at Stanmore. Results vary more here than the Inner West's gentrified image suggests: the Canterbury–Lakemba corridor serves a very different community from the Balmain peninsula, and the strongest schools in each belt are not always the best-known.
